Description:
Here is a fine quality antique American Edwardian solid oak revolving office desk arm chair, by Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Co., circa 1910, which has been newly upholstered in a sage green leather and is in excellent condition. The armchair features a comfortable curved bar back, connected to wrap around arms, supported by an elegant vertical fan back. The chair seat has been newly upholstered, to a professional standard, in top quality full grain sage green leather, which has been finished with hand-tacked brass studs to the perimeter. The chair has also been French polished, by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop. The chair sits on four splayed solid oak legs that terminate on replacement English made sold brass & mug castors. The chair incorporates a revolving mechanism and it rotates 360 degrees; the seat height can be adjusted by first unlocking the mechanism by releasing a vertical latch at the base of the mechanism and then turning a ribbed metal screw on the underside of the chair. The latch can then be locked down again, which prevents accidental raising or lowering of the seat height. The mechanism also features a reclining action, the tension of which can be adjusted by turning a small wheel at the rear of the mechanism. The chair mechanism has been cleaned, restored and serviced and is in excellent working order. The chair frame is sturdy and the item is extremely comfortable to sit on, as it features a lovely padded seat.

The armchair features a mellow brown colour. It has a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Provenance:
Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Co. began as two rival wicker and rattan furniture producers: Heywood Brothers, established in 1826 and Wakefield Company, established in 1855.  Merging in 1897, they became Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Co., later becoming Heywood-Wakefield Company in 1921.  In 1916, they purchased Washburn-Heywood Chair Company, then Oregon Chair Company in 1920 and Lloyd Manufacturing Company in 1921.  As well as producing wicker and rattan furniture, they also produced office chairs and bucket seats for transport companies, culminating in the Sleepy Hollow seat, after employing a Harvard Professer of Anthropology, E. A. Hooton, to research rail passenger seat preferences in 1945.  In 1983, the Heywood-Wakefield Company Complex was added to the National Historic Register.  The South Beach Furniture Company acquired the rights to the name in 1994 and continues to reproduce the wooden furniture.  Older products by Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Co. are considered collectible and have also been featured on Antiques Roadshow.

Condition Report:
This Edwardian desk chair and mechanism are in excellent condition, considering its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chair seat has been newly upholstered, to a professional standard, in top quality full grain sage green leather, which incorporates the traditional brass studwork tacks to the seat perimeter. Therefore, the leather is in excellent condition, with no wear, fading or damage. The reclining and adjustable height mechanism is in good working order, having just been cleaned, restored and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair. The chair features a mellow oak colour, having been professionally French polished, by hand, in our workshop. The legs incorporate replacement English made sold brass & mug castors, which are also in excellent condition. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
