Description:
This is a good quality Victorian Anglo-Indian colonial solid teak dressing table & mirror, circa 1870, in excellent condition. Highly decorative, the dressing table features the original oval shaped bevelled mirror, which is encased with a moulded frame, supported by finely carved upright and out swept arms. The angle of the mirror can be adjusted by tilting the mirror itself, which is attached to the supports with steel threaded screw ends that sit into the mirror frame. Further below, there are two levels to the dressing table; the top level incorporates a bank of three bowed drawers with turned knobs, all which are teak lined and hand dovetailed. Each level of the table boasts lovely moulded edges. The main section of the table houses two large teak lined hand dovetailed drawers, which incorporate brass working lever locks (with key), turned knobs and the original brass key escutcheons. The drawer fronts also feature elegant scribe mouldings. The table stands on the original elegant ring turned teak legs. The dressing table dismantles into three sections (the mirror un-screws and the top bank of drawers can be removed from the dressing table base) to allow safe transportation and access into the house.
The dressing table features a rich red and brown teak colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition.
This dressing table is extremely decorative and would look superb in the bedroom. The item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Provenance:
This table dressing table originates from India and it is likely that it would have been commissioned for a wealthy lady during the days of the British Raj, in colonial India, during the mid-late Victorian period.
Condition Report:
This dressing table is in excellent overall condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The dressing table has been French polished by hand to a professional standard in our workshop. There are no stains or scratches to the top of the table. The mirror is original, and as such, does show signs of age, foxing and scratches (see photos). However, it remains in generally good condition and perfectly functional. If you prefer to have a new mirror fitted, this can be replaced for £45. All drawers run without obstruction and close flush to the frame. The two large drawers incorporate later working brass lever locks (with working key) and boas the original key escutcheons. The turned knobs are most likely old replacements. The dressing table dismantles into three sections (the mirror un-screws, the top bank of drawers can be removed from the dressing table) to allow safe transportation and access into the house. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
