Description:
This is a stunning quality antique English late 17th century, Charles II solid oak inlaid & carved triple panel Yorkshire coffer, circa 1680, boasting original inlay & carvings, with small proportions, in excellent condition.
The coffer is designed with a moulded triple panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens using old replacement hinges, to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry, practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The coffer incorporates a working lock and comes with a key, decorated with a brass key escutcheon. The top rail on the front of the coffer boasts nulled carving, above three inset panels which display beautiful original sycamore & holly floral inlay. The vertical stiles and the panel outlines feature channel moulding.
The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a stunning rich dark colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed.
This beautiful piece boasts a rich dark brown oak colour. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Provenance:
This coffer is attributable to Yorkshire, owing to the formal, yet mobile style of inlay, as well as the quality of construction.
Condition Report:
This late 17th century inlaid English oak coffer is in excellent clean condition, considering its age. The coffer has been wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top (see photos) and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The oak coffer incorporates a replacement working lock with key, decorated with a brass key escutcheon as well as old replacement hinges to the lid. The oak coffer stands on its original length channel moulded stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail and inlay to the panels are all original (not later Victorian additions). There is also no missing inlay to the front panels. The oak coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in excellent condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this quality in such clean condition.
