The early oak chest, which is of practical proportions, comprises a two-plank oak top, decorated with the original chip-edge carvings and is secured by the original iron strap hinges and hand-made iron nails. The oak bible box retains what we believe is the original iron striking plate, which incorporates a restored internal working lock and key. The lid is secured by an iron hinged hasp, which allows the box to be locked. The outer box is decorated with simple applied mouldings, terminating on a moulded plinth. Inside, the interior is clean, dry and functional. The oak chest retains its original, front, side, floorboards and backboards.
This oak bible box would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the office or bedroom, for storing valuable items, such as books, paperwork or jewellery. As this oak bible box boasts its original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
