Description:
This is an attractive antique English Victorian carved oak monks’ bench, circa 1880, designed in the 17th Century style period, with lovely lozenge carvings, in good original condition. The underside of the rectangular top is decorated with a finely carved floral lozenge, and is back is hinged with two oak pegs, which allows the table to convert into a table top. The two oak pegs can be removed to allow you to detach the table top for safe storage or movement. The Victorian oak monks’ bench incorporates two shaped moulded arms, which also act as table supports when the top is folded down. Incorporating a hinged solid oak box seat below, which is decorated with a central carved floral lozenge, in between guilloche carvings, flanked by additional lozenge carved panels either side. The box frame is constructed with elegant moulded stiles and horizontal rail. Additional twin inset panels are visible on the sides of the Victorian oak monks’ bench. The box seat provides useful storage for all manner of shoes, therefore is ideal for use in the hallway! The floor and backboards are in good original condition.
The Victorian oak monks’ bench features a rich dark brown oak colour, similar to that seen in the 17th Century. The box settle has been cleaned and wax-polished by hand in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination are of an excellent standard.

Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and top, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The monk’s seat has been cleaned and wax-polished by hand in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination are of an excellent standard. The original pegs are present and the metamorphic action is in good working condition. There are no missing carvings and no breaks or lose joints to the frame. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and is ready to be used.
