Description:
This is a fine quality early antique Georgian oak housekeeper’s cupboard, suitable either as a bedroom wardrobe or hallway storage cupboard, for hanging clothes, constructed during the George II period, circa 1750, in good condition. This oak cupboard came from a country property in Yorkshire, where it had resided for some time.
The Georgian oak housekeeper’s cupboard boasts a solid boarded top flanked by an elegant ogee moulded protruding canopy. The top section comprises two large doors, interspersed with stiles and rails, incorporating lovely fielded panels; constructed with the traditional pegged mortise & tenon joints. The doors retain the original iron door latches and wooden rotating blocks to secure the doors shut. Inside the cupboard is a fitted brass hanging rail; which makes it ideal for hanging clothes.
The bottom section of the Georgian oak housekeeper’s cupboard incorporates a bank of six graduated drawers. The drawers retain the original pine linings and are constructed with primitive hand-dovetailed joints. The drawer fronts retain the original iron swan-neck handles. The oak livery cupboard stands on its original block feet and retains its original back-boards.
There are some interesting historical printed notes detailing the size and how much it was sold for in 1980 inside the cupboard and another in the top central drawer pertaining how to screw the top and bottom section together.
The oak cupboard has good proportions, which makes it a sought-after size. Originally designed for a country property, this would suite any house. The Georgian oak cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.
The Georgian oak housekeeper’s cupboard boasts a warm rich colour. As it displays the original polish it has a fantastic patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the hallway or bedroom and would suit either a traditional or contemporary home. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
