Description:
This is a fine quality antique English 18th century triple panel Georgian coffer, made from solid oak, displaying a stunning colour, circa 1720, in good original condition. Boasting wide and low proportions, the Georgian coffer is constructed with a solid oak triple-panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by traditional peg dowels. The lid opens on the original iron loop hinges to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry and practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The interior also retains the original candle box with its lid on the right-hand side. The Georgian coffer also incorporates a working steel lock and working key, displaying the original strike plate and a clasp on the front of the coffer. The iron hinged clasp secures the lid closed. The front of the oak coffer incorporates three inset fielded panels interspersed by moulded mullions, decorated with reeded detail. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The Georgian coffer stands on the low reeded stiles (feet).
The back of the Georgian coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a lovely deep, rich oxblood colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.
This oak chest would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
This is a fine quality antique English 18th century triple panel Georgian coffer, made from solid oak, displaying a stunning colour, circa 1720, in good original condition. The Georgian oak chest has been cleaned and wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item (such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received). The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The Georgian coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The coffer also retains its original iron loop hinges. The internal candle box and lid are original and is in good working order. The oak chest also incorporates a working lock and clasp, with working key. The coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this Georgian oak coffer, it is in very good condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean original condition.
