Description:
This is a fine quality antique English small Art Deco wardrobe, constructed with figured walnut timbers, comprising a single drawer, above two doors, circa 1930, in excellent original condition. The Art Deco wardrobe comprises an elegant Art Deco “cloud shaped” design, with the drawer section being narrower than the base, decorated with scroll-shaped sides. The small Art Deco wardrobe features two doors which boasts stunning mirror-matched figured walnut timbers. The doors and drawer retain their original decorative Bakelite & brass handles. The left-hand door retains its original sliding bolts, top and bottom, to secure the door when closed. The right-hand door also retains its original working lock and key. Inside, the Art Deco armoire retains its metal handing rail, with two metal bars near the floor of the wardrobe, which are used to store shoes, and a bank of four vertical storage shelves on the right-hand side. The small Art Deco wardrobe sits on its original moulded splayed plinth and the back features solid backboards. This Art Deco armoire is a single-piece of furniture, which is ideal for use in the smaller rooms.
This small Art Deco wardrobe would be at home in any traditional or contemporary setting and consumes very little space. This piece boasts classic Art Deco styling in the overall design of the curved moulded frame, corners, clean lines to the tops, the handles and the plinth. This Art Deco wardrobe boasts a mellow walnut colour. It has a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
History of Art Deco Furniture:
Art Deco, sometimes referred to as Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. It influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewellery, fashion, cars, cinemas, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as radios and vacuum cleaners. It took its name, short for Arts Décoratifs, from the Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.
