Description:
This is a fine quality English set of six Regency dining chairs, constructed of solid mahogany, with a Trafalgar influence and naval theme, circa 1820, featuring newly upholstered seats, in excellent original condition. The set of dining chairs comprises five side chairs and one carver / armchair; therefore, a total of six chairs. These sturdy heavy chairs are designed with flame mahogany bar backs, decorated with dark inset borders, secured by moulded uprights and buttons, united by a finely carved rope-twist splat. The mahogany dining feature drop-in seats, which have been professionally upholstered in new top-quality newly upholstered in top quality hardwearing light grey and taupe hopsack weave chenille upholstery, finished with traditional hessian backing to the underside. If you do not like the colour/style of the upholstery, we can recover the seats in a fabric of your choice for £20 per chair. The seat frames are raised on sabre shaped front legs, with splayed legs to the rear. The single carver chair is designed in the same way, but includes lovely down-swept arms, each raised on turned vertical supports.
This is an ideal set of chairs for use in either the dining room for formal dining, or in the office for everyday use. They would grace either a traditional or contemporary setting and are a great investment, as they are extremely functional.
Provenance:
The dining chairs were constructed with a naval theme to commemorate Britain’s victory in the famous battle of Trafalgar in 1805 over the French. The Battle of Trafalgar was a naval engagement between the British Royal Navy and the combined fleets of the French and Spanish Navies during the War of the Third Coalition of the Napoleonic Wars. At this time, England was importing the best quality mahogany from its colonies. The rope twist splats on these chair backs are symbolic of this naval theme.
