Description:
This is a fine quality pair of Chippendale style chairs, constructed from solid mahogany in the late Victorian period, by the cabinetmakers “Gill & Reigate of London”, circa 1900, in excellent original condition. Gill & Reigate of London were furniture decorators to King George V of England. The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature a shaped top rail, with a finely executed pierced central fretwork back splat, flanked by vertical moulded rails, decorated with carved blind-fretwork floral detail. Incorporating a drop-in seat design, the seat frames are finely moulded. The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality structured cream silk brocade upholstery, featuring a cream background, with a pale gold structure and duck egg blue spot. The seats have been finished with tradition hessian backing to the undersides. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are well padded and firm but comfortable at the same time – you do not sink into the seat. The chairs stand on finely moulded and chamfered block front legs, with sabre legs to the rear. Chairs with chamfered legs denote quality. This is a true set of chairs; they have not been matched together from other sets of chairs.
The chairs boast a rich, dark mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.
This pair of mahogany Chippendale side chairs would look superb in a variety of rooms from the dining room, office or library. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely set of furniture.
Condition Report:
This is a fine quality pair of Chippendale style chairs, constructed from solid mahogany in the late Victorian period, by the cabinetmakers “Gill & Reigate of London”, circa 1900, in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frames, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chair joints have been cleaned and glued in our workshop; therefore, the chairs are now solid in joint. The chairs have been French polished by hand to a professional standard; therefore, the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. As the chairs retain the patination, the frames boast a lovely original colour. This is a true pair of chairs (they have not been matched together). The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality structured cream silk brocade upholstery, in a cream, pale gold structure, with duck egg blue spot. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are well padded and firm but comfortable at the same time – you do not sink into the seat. They are solid in joint (not loose or wobbly) and are ready to use.
