History of the Console Table:
The origins of the console or pier table evolved in France during the 17th century. They started life as small decorative items of furniture, with theatrical and elegant sophisticated designs which were inspired by Italian architecture and the renaissance period. Console tables became central pieces of furniture in most affluent homes of the time. Designs range from half-moon or crescent shaped, and were usually attached to walls, with the help of a curved bracket known as a ‘console.’ These brackets mainly served the purpose of supporting the table top and French architects gave these tables little front legs to make them appear as free-standing. After a while these tables started to incorporate four legs, instead of two, which avoided the need for wall brackets, allowing the table to be free-standing and allowed to be moved around the home.
