Description:
This is a fine quality matched pair of Georgian elm dining chairs, circa 1780, of rural provenance, in the style of the Chippendale period, with newly upholstered seats, in good original condition. It’s unusual to see Chippendale style chairs constructed from elm; we believe they were designed for a country / rural home; rather than a fine townhouse. The chairs are constructed of solid elm and feature a shaped top rail, with simple pierced central fretwork back splats, flanked by vertical rails, featuring a drop-in seat within the seat frame. The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality heavy duty deep chili red ribbed satin upholstery. The seats have been finished with traditional hessian backing to the undersides. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are well padded and firm but comfortable at the same time – you do not sink into the seat. If you do not like the fabric, we will recover the seats in a fabric of your choice (we charge £30 labour per seat). The pair of Georgian elm dining chairs feature sabre legs to the rear, united by ‘H’ stretchers for additional strength. This is a true set of chairs; they have not been matched together from other sets of chairs.
The matched pair of Georgian elm dining chairs boast a lovely mellow colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.
This matched pair of Georgian elm dining chairs would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, dining room, office or library. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely set of furniture.
History of Thomas Chippendale:
These chairs have been produced in the style of the Chippendale period. The period, from 1755 – 1780, is named for the famous English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, who published a book of furniture designs in 1754, entitled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director. It had a strong influence on the cabinetmakers of the day, which incorporated the styles within the book into the furniture they produced. The Chippendale style contained influences from Roman and Gothic styles, including Gothic arches, Chinese fretwork, columns, capitals, C-scrolls, S-scrolls, ribbons, flowers, leaves, scallop shells, gadrooning and acanthus leaves. Construction predominantly made use of materials such as mahogany, walnut, maple and cherry.

Condition Report:
This is a fine quality matched pair of Georgian elm dining chairs, circa 1780, of rural provenance, in the style of the Chippendale period, with newly upholstered seats, in good original condition. The chairs have been cleaned and French polished and all loose joints have been glued in our workshop; therefore, the chairs are solid in joint. The seats have been finished with tradition hessian backing to the undersides. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are well padded and firm but comfortable at the same time – you do not sink into the seat. If you do not like the fabric, we will recover the seats in a fabric of your choice (we charge £30 labour per seat). Evidence of historical woodworm, which has been thoroughly treated for precaution. Please note, it is common for most elm chairs of this age to have signs of historical woodworm, as this was a susceptible timber. As the Georgian dining chairs retain the original polish, the frames boast a lovely original colour and patination that has some variation. They are solid in joint (not loose or wobbly) and are ready to use.
