Discription

Here is a fine quality antique English Hepplewhite style chair, constructed in the Victorian period, circa 1880, which has been newly upholstered, in excellent condition.  The armchair is constructed of solid mahogany and features a shaped top rail and moulded back; incorporating finely executed pierced fluted splats, flanked by moulded vertical rails. The back is secured to the seat by splayed moulded scroll arms, raised on shaped vertical supports. The stuff over seat has been newly upholstered in top quality pink & green floral pattern silk embroidered upholstery, with traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the seat is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks or signs of wear and tear. The seat is firm, but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The Hepplewhite style chair is raised on moulded front legs, united by stretchers for additional support, to the sabre legs to the rear.  Ideal for use as an office desk chair, or dining chair.

The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale.

The Hepplewhite style chair features a rich dark brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Therefore, the seat is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks or signs of wear and tear. The seat is firm, but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat.  The Hepplewhite style chair boasts a lovely colour and patination, having been cleaned and French polished in our workshop.  The Hepplewhite style chair is solid in joint, does not wobble and is ready to use.
