Here is a fine quality antique English Victorian mahogany revolving office armchair by the renowned cabinetmaker, James Shoolbred & Co., circa 1880, in good working condition. The armchair features a curved scroll bar back, secured by down-swept arms, with an elegant pierced central back splat, flanked by two sets of spindles. The serpentine shaped seat has been newly upholstered in a top quality full grain dark green leather, which has been finished with hand-tacked brass studs to the perimeter. The underside of the seat has been re-webbed in the traditional manner. The chair sits on four splayed mahogany legs that terminate on the original mug castors. The chair incorporates a mechanism allowing it to rotate 360 degrees. The chair mechanism has been restored and serviced and is in good working order. The mechanism is not designed to recline or be height adjustable (as it’s an early office chair). It is however extremely comfortable to sit on as it features a lovely padded seat.
The armchair features a rich brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the office or study as it is so comfortable. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
James (Jas) Shoolbred & Co. who was based in Tottenham Court Road London was ahighly esteemed & respected furniture manufactures and retailer business between the years 1820 – 1931. They made and sold some of the best quality furniture during the Victorian and Edwardian period. They were also known for incorporating textiles and carpets with their furniture in their own catalogues, which some would say was the birth of the interior design business. James Shoolbred was also granted a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s, which gives an indication of the quality of furniture they produced. Their business was always at the forefront of the latest fashions and evolving tastes of the populous at that time.
The chair and mechanism is in good working condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chair seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain dark green leather, which incorporates the traditional brass studwork tacks to the seat perimeter and traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the leather is in excellent condition, with no wear, fading or damage. This chair is not designed to recline or be height adjustable (as it’s an early office chair). It is however an extremely comfortable to sit on as it features a lovely padded seat. The revolving mechanism is in good working order, having just been cleaned and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair. The chair features a rich medium brown mahogany colour, having been cleaned and polished in our workshops. The chair retains its originalmug castors, which are also in good condition. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
