Description:
A fine quality pair of antique English Victorian mahogany bedside chests, comprising four drawers each, circa 1860, in excellent condition. They are pedestals from a Victorian dressing table, which have been adapted into bedside chests. Each mahogany bedside chest is designed with elegant round moulded cornered tops; this design is also reflected in the plinths. The pair of Victorian bedside tables comprise four graduated drawers to each unit; the top drawers feature the original working brass lever lock & key. The drawer fronts retain the original turned mahogany knobs and are constructed with top-quality figured mahogany. The drawer linings and bottoms are constructed with fine hand-dovetailed joints; the drawers close flush to the frame and the Victorian pot cupboards stand on their top-quality rounded mahogany plinths. The mahogany bedside chests are constructed of top-quality mahogany timber imported from the British colonies, during the earlier part of the early Victorian period. The quality is reflected in the weight of these bedsides; they are heavy to lift. Ideal for use in the bedroom as bedsides or lamp tables in the living room.

History of the Bedside / Nightstand:
The earliest bedside tables / nightstands in the late 18th century, were use to house a bedrooms’ chamber pot, as most housed did not have the luxury of plumbed bathrooms and took the form of a cabinet (which housed the chamber pot), with a drawer above. As time progressed and with the advent of plumbed bathrooms, the design and shapes of bedside tables evolved, to includes such designs as a bank of drawers. The nightstand evolved into a useful piece of furniture to stand either side of the bed, to house such items as a lamp, glasses, books and now the mobile phone!
