Description:
This is a charming rustic antique English mariners’ Victorian pitch pine trunk, retaining the original painted scumble finish, displaying lovely medullary rays, with large proportions, circa 1860, in good original condition. Uncovered from a country house in Ludlow, Shropshire, this mariners’ chest is of primitive / rustic design. It has been constructed with a twin-plank top, with a cleated moulding, above single plank sides, front and back. Retaining the original steel strap hinges, steel carrying handles and key escutcheon, it also retains the original working steel lock (with key). The interior is clean, dry, practical and usable. The lid retains its original steel strap hinges, which are in good working condition. The interior comprises the original candle box, with lid, also retaining its original floorboards and backboards.  The Victorian pitch pine trunk base sits directly on the floor.  The back of the trunk retains its original panels along with the original floorboards.  The Victorian pitch pine trunk has been wax-polished by hand (over the original scumble finish), in our workshop, to a professional standard, therefore the colour and patination are of an excellent standard.
This storage chest would look great in a variety of rooms, as a decorative piece in the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as a TV stand, or ottoman or blanket box at the foot of the bed etc.
This beautiful piece boasts a warm rustic golden-brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
