Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian walnut ebonised Canterbury, circa 1870, in excellent original condition. The Canterbury comprises an outer frame with turned column supports at each corner, capped with small finials. The Canterbury is divided into three compartments, by two horizontal rails, raised on turned supports. The compartments are ideal for storing magazines, newspapers or music sheets. Below is a drawer, with reeded front, retaining its original brass handles & back plates. The drawer is mahogany lined and constructed with hand dovetailing and the drawer front is decorated with scribe reed detail. The Canterbury is raised on its original turned legs which retain the original brass castor collars and wheels. This item has been painted black – possibly at the time of construction (following the death of Prince Albert, black became a widely-used colour, often being applied retrospectively to items of furniture in a reflection of Queen Victoria’s mourning). The Canterbury has been constructed from fine quality walnut timbers.
The Canterbury features a black ebonised finish. As it boasts the original finish, it has a fantastic colour; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look great in the living room, hallway or bedroom of any house. This item would complement any home, so don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
