Description:
This is a fine quality antique English William IV couch, with a double scroll end design, constructed of solid mahogany, with a stunning carved frame, circa 1835, in good original condition, which would benefit from being re-upholstered. Decorated with an elegant shell shaped central pediment, flanked by decorative carved scroll ends arms, the frame boasts finely carved scroll arms, which are decorated with acanthus leaves, gadroon and scroll carved detail. Below the seat sits a moulded frieze flanked by floral carved cartouches either end, above turned reeded legs, which terminate on the original bass castor cups and castors. The frame is constructed of solid mahogany. At this time, England was importing the best quality mahogany from its colonies.
The William IV couch is upholstered in a “burnt” orange colour velvet, comprising a foam buttoned swab cushion and wooden bolster cushions (which are upholstered in material), complete with new matching braiding. The seat frame is webbed in the traditional manner, which provides plenty of support. The mahogany sofa would benefit from being re-upholstered as the upholstery and braiding is worn and tired. The bolster cushions comprise wooden cores, which would benefit from being replaced with material cores.
This William IV sofa would look great in the living room, dining room or hallway of any large house. This item would compliment any home so don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely unique piece of furniture.
The William IV couch boasts a mid-brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
