Description:
This is a superb quality antique George III Welsh housekeeper’s oak cupboard, circa 1790 originating from the Carmarthenshire/ Cardiganshire border area, Wales. Also known as a “Carmarthen coffer”, it has a specific regional design originating from West Wales. The cupboard boasts an elegant protruding canopy below a solid polished boarded top. The Carmarthen coffer is divided into two sections; the top section comprises a cupboard with a single shelf. The doors to the cupboard boast two lovely raised and fielded Gothic shaped Arcadian panels and retain their original oak knobs. The doors also feature the original working lock and a working key. The front corners of the top section are adorned with assimilated bamboo spindles to the corners. Below the doors is a set of three moulded rectangular panels. The bottom section consists of five working drawers, arranged in a three-over-two configuration. The two drawers either side of the top central drawer feature the original working locks and a working key. The drawers are pine lined, constructed with hand dovetailed joints, retaining their original turned knobs. The cupboard features the original polished oak top, inset side panels and original backboards constructed with very good quality wide planks. The cupboard stands on the original Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard has good proportions which makes it a sought after size it was designed to fit into farmhouses with low ceilings. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.
The cupboard boasts a stunning rich brown oak colour. As it displays the original polish it has a fantastic patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning it has received.
