Description:
This is a fine quality and rare antique Irish Georgian desk chair, with a Chippendale design influence, constructed from solid red walnut, and newly upholstered in green buttoned leather, circa 1750, in excellent condition. This rare antique Irish chair, may have started life in the Georgian period as a hall / occasional chair, but given it has an upholstered seat, it would serve many uses around the home. Today, such a chair would be more useful as office / desk chair. The Georgian desk chair, incorporates an elegantly shaped backrest, upholstered in green leather, bordered by hand-tacked brass studwork and the red walnut frame. Supported by shaped upright scroll rails, elegant scroll arms splay outward, giving the effect of a folding piece of timber, secured below by an additional vertical splayed support, which unite the serpentine shaped seat, with a banded walnut frieze. The chair frame has been constructed with mortise and tenon joints, and pegs.
The Georgian desk chair seat has been newly upholstered to a professional standard in top quality full-grain antique green leather, with a deep-buttoning, finished with hand-tacked brass studs to the perimeter. The underside of the seat has been finished with a traditional hessian backing. The walnut office chair is raised on elegant cabriole front legs, which terminate on crisp carved “hoof” feet, with splayed legs at the rear. The walnut chair frame has been cleaned and French polished, by hand, to a professional standard, therefore the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. The walnut office chair sits on four splayed walnut legs that terminate on its original steel roller-ball castors, which are in good condition.
This Georgian desk chair would look superb in either a traditional or contemporary home, in a variety of rooms, especially the office or study as it is so comfortable. This item would certainly grace any home.
History of the Hall Chair:
Hall chairs emerged in the mid-18th century Georgian era, with designs featured in influential works like Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director (1754). They were placed in the entrance halls of stately homes to provide a practical place for guests to sit while waiting, and for servants to stand or rest. Being highly visible in the home’s entryway, hall chairs were designed to make a powerful statement about the homeowner’s status and taste, often decorated with the family crest to communicate wealth and lineage. They typically have a solid, upright back, straight rather than curved, designed to be placed against a wall. Many feature a solid wooden seat, which was practical for cleaning and also served a secondary purpose of making the seat uncomfortable for servants, encouraging them to not linger. Backrests were often highly decorative, displaying intricate scrolls, shell motifs, or the family’s coat of arms. The rise in global trade and the Industrial Revolution led to an explosion of wealth, making hall chairs a key item for prominent families to display their social position. Hall chairs remained a popular feature in grand homes through the 19th century.
Today, antique hall chairs are valued for their robustness, aesthetic appeal, and history. Often used in modern interiors as decorative accent chairs or in pairs to create a symmetric look, or for other functional uses such as office chairs and desk chairs around the home.
