This is a fine quality small colonial campaign teak writing / jewellery box, circa 1860, in good original condition. It would also be useful as a jewellery or sewing box. The exterior of the box is decorated with the original brass strapping to the lid, front, back and sides. The front of the box features a teardrop shaped brass key escutcheon. The box retains its original lock and keys, which are in good working order. The interior boasts ten compartments, including an upper tier of 9 compartments, with a tenth underneath, accessible via an opening. Much of the interior is constructed for easy removal.
This box is a truly classic example from the mid-late Victorian period in colonial India and is highly decorative and unique. The level of detail and craftsmanship displayed is impressive. It is rare to see an example, which not only is in excellent condition but also in original condition.
The box features a rich teak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition.
