This is a good quality large rustic colonial mahogany jewellery box, circa 1880, in good original condition. The outer box lid is decorated with a diamond shaped brass insert and flanked by brass strapping to the corners. The brass strapping is also present on all four sides of the box. The front of the box is adorned with floral shaped brass inlay, along with a diamond shaped brass inset escutcheon. The box features the original lock (with a working key), which is in good working order. The interior boasts multiple compartments, some with lids, and others, which are open trays. There is a large central tray, which has a sliding floor to reveal a secret compartment below, which is ideal for storing jewellery or sewing equipment. The inside of the lid features a large mirror with a moulded bezel. Much of the interior is constructed for easy removal. The item stands on a bracket plinth which features lovely blind fretwork floral carving.
This box is a truly classic example from the late Victorian period in colonial India. The level of detail and craftsmanship displayed is second to none. It is rare to see an example, which not only is in good condition but also completely original (apart from the mirror).
The box features a warm red mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition.

The box is in good original condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the exterior and leading edges of the box and brass inlay but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The box is completely original; the only item, which has been replaced, is the mirror. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination. There are no missing compartments to the box. There is no missing brass strapping. The box features its original working lock, with a working key. The hinges are also in good working order. The interior is dry and clean. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
