Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Edwardian single four poster bed by Heal’s & Son of London, constructed of solid mahogany, with a Georgian design influence, circa 1910, in excellent original condition.
This bed fits a standard UK single size mattress (3ft” wide x 6ft 3” long) and the mattress can be either situated on the wooden slats, or on a sprung box base instead. The single four poster bed retains its original “Vono” cast angle iron bed frame, with supports below, which are used to support a sprung box base – these can be removed if not required. The angle irons are united with four bolts, to secure the bed frame.
The design of the bed takes its influence from the Georgian period, with a protruding dentil cornice, which is supported by two tapering reeded columns at the front, and two square tapering posts at the headboard. The canopy retains its original brass curtain rails, which allows the Edwardian poster bed to be dressed with curtains.
The single four poster bed headboard comprises a single panel section with a moulded top rail and at the foot of the bed, there is an open footboard. The Georgian style four poster bed stands on four tapering block legs, terminating on spade feet.
This single four poster bed retains the original polish, which is why the bed boasts a rich brown mahogany colour and patination. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been stripped and re-polished. This bed would look stunning in either a contemporary or traditional setting. It dismantles for easy transportation and we can provide good quality new mattresses if required.
Hisorty & Provenance:
Heal’s (“Heal and Son Ltd”) is a British furniture retail company comprising seven stores, selling a range of furniture, lighting and home accessories. In 2001, a guide published in association with the Victoria & Albert Museum wrote that for over two centuries Heal’s had been known for promoting modern design and for employing talented young designers.
The original Heal’s firm was established in 1810 as a feather-dressing business by John Harris Heal and his son.
In 1818, the business moved to Tottenham Court Road, London and expanded into bedding, bedstead and furniture manufacture and into retailing. By the end of the nineteenth century, it was one of the best-known furniture suppliers in London.[1]
In the early 20th century Heal’s was one of the first retailers to bring electric lighting to the British market. During the second world war the factory at Tottenham Court Road was converted to produce parachutes. Heal’s featured at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and in 1977 restored the banqueting table at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
