Description:
This is a fine quality antique English late 17th Century William & Mary chest of drawers, constructed from solid oak, with a geometric moulded design, circa 1680 – 1700, of small proportions, boasting a stunning colour, in good condition. The oak chest of drawers boasts a two-plank moulded top within a mitred border, above four drawers in a two-over-two configuration. The drawer fronts are decorated with mitred geometric moulded panels, flanked by a simple oak frame; all of which is typical of this period. Each drawer features a different design. The drawers feature early Victorian replacement brass drop ring handles. The shaped foliate brass back plates and coat of arms key escutcheons are most likely original. Each drawer incorporates steel lever locks and a working key. The drawers are oak lined and slide on a bar-runner, which indicates this is an early oak chest of drawers. The William & Mary chest of drawers features solid inset panel sides, along with the original backboards and floor. The oak chest of drawers terminates on a moulded frieze and is original stiles (feet). The frame of the chest has been built using the traditional peg construction method.
The William & Mary chest of drawers displays a dark rich-brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.
This oak chest of drawers would look superb in a variety of rooms, from the hallway to the bedroom; in either a traditional setting or even a contemporary setting. This 17th century chest would certainly grace any home. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
