History of Art Deco Furniture:
Art Deco, sometimes referred to as Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. It influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewellery, fashion, cars, cinemas, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as radios and vacuum cleaners. It took its name, short for Arts Décoratifs, from the Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.

History of the Brass & Glass Coffee Table:
The brass and glass coffee table, often associated with luxury and elegance, has a history rooted in early 20th-century design movements, gaining significant popularity during the Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern periods. These tables, featuring materials like polished, gilt, or patinated brass combined with clear, smoked, or tempered glass, often reflect the glamorous Hollywood Regency style.
Origins and Key Eras:
Art Deco (1920s–1940s): This era represented the peak of brass furniture, with designers using the material to create sleek, metallic shapes. Italian designers, such as Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, created notable glass and brass pieces in the 1930s.
Mid-Century Modern (1950’s – 1960’s):
This period continued to embrace brass, with designers experimenting with materials and forms. French designers, including Maison Jansen, created iconic gilded brass and glass tables that were highly sought after.
Hollywood Regency (1970’s):
The 1970’s brought a revival of interest in brass, featuring more opulent designs with brass frames and heavy glass tops, often associated with designers like Peter Ghyczy.
Key Designers and Manufacturers:
Peter Ghyczy: Known for designing brass and glass tables in the 1970’s with “floating” glass tops.
Maison Jansen: A Paris-based firm known for high-end, 18th-century inspired brass furniture.
Pietro Chiesa: An Italian designer who worked with Fontana Arte in the 1930’s.
Morex, Italy: Produced brass-framed tables in the 1980’s.
Baker Furniture: Produced 1960’s designs with carved, bamboo-style brass legs.
