Description:
This top-quality pair of oak tables, in the English 17th Century style, comes with a single lockable drawer, making it ideal as a pair of lamp / side tables, bedsides or nightstands, and remains in excellent original condition. Additionally, the 17th Century style English oak side tables feature large proportions, measuring 65cm / 25½” / 2ft 1½” wide. Indeed, craftsmen originally used this design of English oak bedside tables in England from the mid-17th Century onwards, during the Jacobean and Stuart periods in England, the Netherlands, and Northern Europe. Furthermore, craftsmen constructed the Jacobean style oak bedside tables in the traditional manner, with mortise and tenon pegged joints, and the tables feature a moulded top above a straight frieze, comprising a working drawer. Solid brass swan neck handles on fretwork backplates decorate the drawer fronts of the 17th Century style oak bedside tables, while traditional dovetail joints and solid oak drawer linings form the drawer frame. Meanwhile, ring turned legs raise the 17th Century style oak side tables, and with bobbin turned stretchers, uniting the legs at the base. Consequently, the pair of antique style oak bedside tables boasts a mellow golden oak colour. In fact, the pair of oak side tables carries a fantastic colour, depth and patination, which only age and years of care and cleaning can achieve. Ultimately, the pair of Jacobean style oak tables would look superb in a variety of rooms, from the bedroom and hallway to the living room. These 17th Century style English oak side tables would certainly grace any home and, since they’re extremely functional, make a great investment. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
History of 17th Century Oak Furniture:
Craftsmen made most of the early 17th Century furniture using oak, because it was readily available in many parts of the country. As the middle classes grew, demand rose for furniture that people could use not only for domestic purposes, but also for displaying their wealth to the outside world. Consequently, workshops produced an increasing quantity of high-quality furniture, often decorated in a localised form. Craftsmen frequently made items to order, reflecting the specific requirements of size and decoration; indeed, they would often date and initial pieces, sometimes commemorating a marriage or birth in the family. Furniture often carries branded initials, and different initials often reflect a change of ownership.
Early oak furniture survives today thanks to the durability of oak as a material, and also because of the quality of the workmanship. Before joining a guild of craftsmen, a joiner had to work several years as an apprentice. Because the guilds insisted on the highest standards of craftsmanship and materials, they ensured the consistency in quality of 17th Century joined oak furniture. Meanwhile, years of dusting and polishing have built up the colour and surface, giving the wood a softness that appeals in most environments today.
