The footboard has an open front and the round footboard corner posts are turned and carved with floral carvings. The bed frame has a stunning shaped floral carved frieze, which is visible on all four sides of the bed (including the back of the bed). The bed sits on four stunning carved floral cabriole legs and scrolled pad feet. The bed features its original polish, which is very similar to a dark ebony style colour.
The boasts the original polish, which is why it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This bed would look very good in either a contemporary or traditional setting. This colonial Raj Victorian bed is constructed of sissoo wood (a member of the Rosewood family) and has a superior structure.
Provenance
The style of these beds dates from 1840 until 1947 (until Indian Independence). The beds were constructed for the British Raj, their families and the British Military in Colonial India. The beds were designed to collapse and be transported “flat pack” so could easily be moved whilst on military exercises and to their summerhouses in the hills. They were made when the Raj was at its height. The size, style and quality of the bed depict the status of the occupier or the military rank of the owner. They were made from the finest wood usually Mahogany, Teak or Sissoo wood (a member of the rosewood family).

External length = 232cm or 91½” or 7ft 7½”
External width = 160cm or 63” or 5ft 3”
Footboard height = 77.5cm or 30½” or 2ft 6½”
Height from floor to top of side rails = 48cm or 19” or 1ft 7”
Side rail depth = 18cm or 7”
Mattress Dimensions (slats not lowered)
Length = 213.5cm or 84” or 7ft max
Width = 147cm or 57¾ or 4ft 9¾” max (excluding side rails / slat width)
Width = 153cm or 60¼” or 5ft 0¼” max (including side rails)
Mattress Dimensions (slats lowered)
Length = 213.5cm or 84” or 7ft max
Width = 144.5cm or 56¾” or 4ft 8¾” max
It is advised that 1” should be removed from the mattress width dimension if the slats are being lowered. Around 2” should be removed from the above mattress length dimension to allow the mattress to comfortably fit on the bed between the headboard and footboard. We would also recommend that the corners be cut out (so that the mattress has an inverted corner) by 1½” – this allows the mattress to fit around the block corners of the bed frame. Please contact us for further clarification of the suggested mattress dimension.
Mattresses:
Because these beds are individually unique and do not always conform to modern mattress dimensions, we also supply a range of customized high quality mattresses for these beds starting from £400. Our mattresses can have the corners removed so to maximize the mattress fit in the super-structure of bed. The price quoted does not include the mattress. Please enquire for a mattress quote.
Lowering the Slats:
If you require the slats lowering into the bed frame, we charge £90 for the structural work. By lowering the slats the width of the mattress will be reduced by 1” in total. The slats are lowered by around 3” in height. The benefit of lowering the slats is that you get to see more of the headboard carvings even though you are using a modern 10” – 12” depth mattress. The original Victorian mattresses would have only been 2” – 3” deep.
