Description:
Here is a superb exhibition quality antique Victorian Colonial Anglo Indian campaign solid mahogany two door glazed bookcase, circa 1870, in excellent original condition. This bookcase comprises a detachable protruding cornice, with a glazed two-door cabinet and cupboard base below. The top section is decorated with stunning quality foliate carved corbels above and below the doors. Moulded arched panels house glass doors. The left-hand door retains its original brass sliding bolt latches, while the right-hand door boasts a green amber handle and retains the original working lock, with working key. The inside of the cabinet is divided into three tiers, with two removable shelves. The cabinet rests on a cupboard base. The base is also decorated with stunning quality foliate carved shaped legs to the corners, echoing the design of the top section. The doors retain their original working latches to the left-hand door and working lock and key & green amber handle to the right-hand door. The base section doors open to reveal two fully working, hand dovetailed, mahogany lined campaign drawers, which feature the original brass handles and escutcheons. The drawers include their original working locks and working key. In addition to the main drawers, there are two secret drawers; if the two main drawers are removed, there is a cubby hole inside the base at either end. The cubby holes each contain a single, narrow drawer, which can be lifted up and pulled out. These secret drawers are ideal for the storage of high value items, to keep them safe. Below is a two-tier compartment cupboard. The base rests on its original moulded plinth, which in turn rests on the original pad feet. The bookcase dismantles into three sections – the cornice, the glazed cabinet and cupboard base – for ease of transportation and access.
This glazed Victorian bookcase features a rich mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the office or library. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional.
