Description:
Here is a stunning example of an antique Edwardian Art Nouveau mahogany & satinwood inlaid glass display cabinet, by D. Hill, Carter & Co. of London House, West Hartlepool, circa 1910, in excellent original condition. This display cabinet comprises a marquetry inlaid dome shaped gallery, with profuse marquetry floral detail, above a flat cornice. Please note, the inlay is genuine marquetry inlaid and not painted. Below, the cabinet boasts the original bow shaped glass cabinet frame, with a bow shaped door, featuring the original velvet cabinet lining across two shelves. The door retains the original brass handle & tin escutcheon, with the original working brass lever lock and working key. The glazed central section is flanked by four full length turned columns which terminate on spade feet and marquetry inlaid spandrels. Either side, there is an open central recess display shelf, flanked by a row of finely turned spindles, and display shelves either side. The cabinet retains the original backboards and there is the original label to the reverse reading ‘D. Hill Carter & Co Ltd, London House, West Hartlepool’. This display cabinet boasts classic Art Neadeau design and styling, which is evident in the turned columns, shaped spandrels, heavy floral satinwood marquetry and design of the frame as a whole.
This cabinet features a warm, rich mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
