Description:
This is a fine quality antique English late 17th century, Charles II solid oak carved triple panel coffer, circa 1680, boasting original carvings, with small proportions, in excellent condition.
The coffer is designed with a moulded triple panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens using its original metal loop hinges, to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry, practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards, except the central board, which has been replaced at a later date. On the right-hand side of the inside of the oak coffer, remains original candle box compartment, with a later lid. The coffer incorporates a working lock and comes with a key and an old replacement working steel clasp. The top rail on the front of the coffer is profusely decorated with the original carvings, incorporating fine floral scroll detail on a punch-work background, above three inset carved panels. The central carved panel depicts a floral carved cross on a punch-work background, flanked by two carved sunflower inset panels. The vertical stiles and bottom horizontal rail are decorated with primitive null carvings.
The carvings to the panels and rails of this coffer are all finished with punchwork backgrounds. Altogether, this coffer displays a rich array of fine original carvings. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor, except a later central plank. Overall, this coffer boasts a stunning rich dark colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed.
This beautiful piece boasts a mellow oak colour. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
This late 17th century carved oak coffer is in excellent clean condition, considering its age. The coffer has been wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top (see photos) and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor (except for the central plank which has been replaced at a later date), sides and back. The oak coffer incorporates a working lock with key, with an old replacement steel clasp and original metal wire loop hinges to the lid. The coffer retains its original internal candle box floor and wall, which incorporates a later lid. The oak coffer stands on short stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail, panels & stiles are all original (not later Victorian additions). The oak coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in excellent condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean condition.
