Description:
This is a fine quality antique English late 17th century solid oak bible box, boasting lovely colour and patination, with original carvings, circa 1680 – 1700, in excellent condition. The box features a moulded two plank top, which is secured with two later period iron strap hinges. The underside of the box features two later oak guide bars, to secure the lid in place when closed. The box incorporates an iron plate and locking clasp, with a later working lock and key. The front of the box is profusely carved with fine quality original lunette carvings. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. It is nice to see the interior retaining the original candle box compartment and lid, originally used for storing candles. The interior also retains its original floorboards, sides and backboards. The box sits on a moulded plinth base. The back of the box retains its original panels along with the original floor. Overall, this trunk boasts a lovely rich original colour and patination.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the office or bedroom, for storing valuable small items, such as jewellery. Asides from use a bible box, it could be used as a small TV stand, small coffee table, ottoman, blanket box etc.
As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
The bible box is in excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the top, external sides and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item (see photos).
