Description:
Here is a very good quality antique English late 17th Century solid oak joined Wainscot carved high back arm chair, in excellent original condition. The armchair is designed with an attractive high back, which incorporates an arched, shaped pierced top rail, boasting a central nulled lunette carving. Below the top rail is a central moulded panel. The armchair features down swept arms, raised on traditional turned supports, connecting the back to the seat. The armchair incorporates a solid oak seat, which is firm, but surprisingly comfortable to sit on, while the seat frame displays foliate lunette carvings. The armchair stands on traditional turned “gun barrel” front legs, with sturdy block legs to the rear. The legs are united by stretchers to the front, back and sides, providing additional strength. This armchair boasts the original polish; therefore, it has a fantastic depth of colour and patination. This Wainscot armchair is solid in joint and ready to use.
These types of chairs were usually commissioned for wealthy households, where they were deemed status symbols and used by the masters of the house. The presence of arms, typical elaborate carvings and the finest quality of oak used, suggested high status within one’s community. They were an upscale alternative to the more common turned country chairs of that period, found in cottages.
The armchair features a rich mid brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This rich original colour cannot be re-created if the chair has been re-polished.

Condition Report:
This Wainscot arm chair is in excellent overall condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair, back, seat arms and legs, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Incorporating later elements, the chair frame and pegged joints are all in good solid condition having been cleaned, glued in our workshop. The armchair has been wax-polished in order to revive the stunning original colour and patination. It is a well-constructed, fine quality 17th century armchair, which is ready to be used. It is also heavy to lift!
