Description:
This is a very good quality antique English late 18th century Georgian solid oak joined triple panel coffer, circa 1780, in excellent condition. The coffer is constructed with a thumb moulded top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens on the original iron strap hinges to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry and practical and usable and retains its original floor-boards. The coffer also features a working lock (with working key) and the original key escutcheon. The front of the coffer is decorated with three moulded inset panels. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a lovely rich honey oak colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed.
This beautiful piece boasts a rich honey oak colour. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
The coffer is in excellent condition. Nominal old marks to the top and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The lid retains the original strap hinges and the coffer features a working lock (with working key) and the original key escutcheon. The feet (stiles) have been re-tipped to a high standard, at some point in the past – this is not surprising, given this is the contact point with the floor. Please remember this item is over 200 years old, and the feed would stand on damp floors and continuously mopped around, when the floor was cleaned. The coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in good condition.
