Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English George III oak office bureau desk, circa 1780 – 1800, displaying a lovely rich colour and patination, in excellent condition. The bureau is in excellent working order, boasting cross banded oak top and moulded fall. The bureau retains the original oak lined waterfall interior of a total of 13 small drawers, 8 of which feature brass knobs, below 6 pigeonhole slots. Situated between the pigeonholes is an arch-shaped ‘cubby hole’, flanked by columns. Additionally, there are 5 drawers disguised as trim, with one drawer each side of the ‘cubby hole’, above the pigeonholes, disguised as shaped frieze. Furthermore, the two columns as well as the arch which together form the ‘cubby hole’ comprise a further three drawers – ideal for secreting important documents. The interior of the fall has been newly lined with a new olive green and gold tooled leather. The fall is supported by the original two pull-out slides, with small brass knobs. Below the fall is a bank of four graduated cock beaded and cross banded drawers. The drawers are pine lined, hand dovetailed and feature fine quality old period replacement swan neck brass handles and escutcheons. The fall and the drawers also each boast their original working locks, with working key. The bureau retains its original backboards and is raised on a moulded plinth, supported by original ogee front bracket feet, with restored bracket feet to the back.
The bureau would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the office, hallway, living room or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home and is an excellent investment which has stood the test of time. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This Georgian oak bureau is in excellent overall condition, considering its age. Nominal old use marks to the top, leading edges, fall, interior and inside of drawers, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The bureau has been French polished by hand, to a professional standard, in our workshops. The fall opens easily and there are no warps to it, which is common with items of this age. The interior of the fall has been newly lined with a new olive green and gold tooled leather. The interior is clean; however, some ink stains are present, but these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the item. The original brass fall hinges are in good working condition. The fall and drawers retain their original pine drawer linings, working locks, with working key. The drawers close flush to the frame and feature fine quality old period replacement swan neck brass handles and escutcheons. The bureau retains its original backboards and is raised on a moulded plinth, supported by original ogee front bracket feet, with restored bracket feet to the back (see photos). The bureau retains its original pine backboards. The bureau boasts a stunning mellow colour and patination. This Georgian bureau is solid in joint and ready to use.
