Description:
Here is a fine antique English 18th century George II oak provincial panelled chest of drawers, circa 1740, which splits into two parts, in excellent condition. The chest is constructed with a three-plank oak top with a thumb-moulded edge, which is echoed in the base and features solid oak panelled sides. Comprising of a two-over-three graduated drawer design, the drawers feature old replacement (most likely Victorian) brass drop handles and foliate escutcheons. The drawers also retain their original lever locks to the top and bottom full width drawers, however, only the lock to the upper drawer is working (with working key). The other drawers display faux locks and escutcheons. The chest is constructed of solid oak, with oak lined interiors; it also retains its original oak backboards. The drawers are in good working order; they are clean inside and close flush to the frame. The chest stands on its original bracket feet: it is of extremely good quality and is made from the best materials; thus, it is heavy to lift! The chest dismantles into two sections (see photos), allowing for easy transportation and access into the home.
The chest features a rich deep oxblood oak colour, with a wonderful grain configuration to the front and sides. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This chest of drawers would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This chest of drawers would certainly grace any home. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This chest is in excellent condition having been cleaned and polished in our workshop. There are nominal old use marks to the top, corners and leading edges and inside of drawers but nothing significant considering the age of the item (please see photos). The drawers retain old replacement brass drop handles neck handles and foliate escutcheons. The drawers close flush to the frame, while the top and bottom full-width drawers retain their original lever locks, however, only the lock to the upper drawer is working (with a working key). The rest of the drawers feature faux locks. The chest benefits from a lovely deep rich oak colour, with a wonderful grain configuration. The chest stands on its original bracket feet. Evidence of historical minor woodworm to the bracket feet, which have been thoroughly treated. This not surprising considering that this item is over 270 years old. Original oak backboards. The chest is of good quality, solid in joint and ready to use.
