Description:
Here is a good quality antique English Edwardian solid oak 3ft wide freestanding Angus of London rolltop pedestal desk, circa 1910, in excellent original condition. Constructed by the world-renowned desk furniture cabinetmaker, Angus of London, the desk has been constructed from good quality solid oak and the desk exterior also features solid oak panels. Fashioned with an “S” shaped design to the top section, this roll top desk was designed to be freestanding in the centre of a room. The sliding tambour can be lifted up to reveal a bank of internal drawers and compartments. The desk boasts two internal drawers constructed of lace wood and 10 pigeon holes to the top section. Amongst the internal drawers, two of them are pen drawers, disguised as decorative trim (see photos) and two further pen trays. A letter rack is also situated either side and to the back of the desk to store letters upright.
When the sliding tambour is pulled down and secured using the original lock and working key, this will lock the top section. The lock is original and functional, with a working key. The central and pedestals drawers below retain a working lock and key too. The desk stands on a single right-hand pedestal, which incorporate a bank of three cushion fronted graduated drawers. The drawers retain their original, carved oak cup handles. Sitting on top of the pedestal is a single large pull-out-writing slide, ideal for organising additional paper work around you, whilst you work. There is a solid oak panel modesty board in between the pedestal and side panel at the back of the desk. The desk stands on its original working floor castors. The desk can be dismantled into three main sections for easy access into the property if required. However, it is currently assembled and will be shipped and delivered as whole desk unless notified otherwise.
This oak rolltop desk is a truly classic example of a good quality English roll top desks from the early 20th century period. The level of detail and craftsmanship displayed is high. It is rare to see an example, which not only retains all its internal drawers, but is also in excellent original condition.
The desk boasts a mid-brown oak colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition.
This oak rolltop desk would look superb in a variety of rooms from the work place to the home office. The desk would certainly grace any home or office and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
