Description:
This is a fine quality English George III Chippendale mahogany chest on chest, circa 1780, in good condition. There is a lovely grain configuration and colour to the mahogany on the drawer fronts and sides of the chest. Constructed during the mid part of the George III period, it features a protruding moulded dentil cornice above a two-over-three drawer design. The chest dismantles into three sections (cornice, top and base), for easy storage and transportation. The drawers feature old replacement (most likely Victorian) brass curved drop handles on oval brass escutcheons which boast urn detailing, with working lever locks and. Furthermore, the drawers are mahogany lined and hand dovetailed, finished with quality cock beading. The top section of the chest boasts elegant fluted canted corners. The top section terminates at the base of the intersection between the two chests, where a horizontal reeded moulding separates the two chests. The top chest is smaller than the base chest, which consists of three drawers. Therefore, there are lovely proportions to the waistline of this piece, rather than the top and base being the same width. The whole piece is also designed with smaller proportions, so it is likely to fit in more rooms. The sides of the chests are also constructed from mahogany. The chest also features its original mahogany backboards and whole of the chest stands on its original bracket feet. The top and bottom are completely original. This is an ideal item for the bedroom or landing for storing clothes.
The chest boasts a rich warm red and brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from bedroom to the landing; it is very useful as there are so many drawers for storage. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The chest is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and inside of drawers but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The drawers retain their locks, which are working and feature a working key. The chest stands on its original bracket feet and retains its original backboards. This chest boasts its original polish, which ensures a fantastic colour to the mahogany. It is solid in joint, does not wobble and is ready to be used.
