Description:
This is a superb quality antique English Georgian Chippendale style camel back mahogany sofa, constructed during the Victorian period, circa 1860 – 1880, with a finely carved frame, in excellent condition. Comprising a camel shaped back, the splayed arms are decorated with a blind fretwork carved frame with interlacing ribbon blind-fretwork terminating with a floral cartouche. The blind fretwork detail continues below the seat frame but in the form of cresting waves, above a well carved gadroon frieze, interspersed by carved shells to the tops of the three front feet, which terminate on hairy lion paw feet. The back of the sofa terminates on splayed legs. The sofa has been upholstered in a top quality embossed plush velvet draylon (cherry-red colour) at some point in the past. The seat comprises a feather swab cushion which sits on a sprung base. Three feather filled cushions provide additional back support. What makes this an extremely comfortable sofa to sit at, is its generous seat depth of 81.5cm or 32” or 2ft 8”, along with all the feather cushions. The proportions are similar to a bergère suite, which are renowned for being extremely comfortable to sit on! The mahogany frame has been cleaned and French polished, by hand, to a professional standard, therefore the colour and patination of the mahogany is of an excellent standard. The sofa seat between 3 – 4 persons.
Ideal for use in a formal club or home, this Georgian style sofa is an extremely decorative but functional piece of furniture. This item would complement any setting, so don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely unique piece of furniture.
