Description:
Here is a lovely quality antique English George III oak & elm trunk, of a practical size, useful as an ottoman or coffee table, circa 1780, in good original condition. The trunk features a two-plank top within a moulded frame. The trunk is constructed using two planks on the top and bottom, with single planks to the front, back and sides, united by pronounced hand dovetail joints to all four corners. It stands on a simple moulded plinth on small bracket feet. The top opens up to reveal the original wrought iron strap hinges, which are in good condition, and the interior retains the original candle box. The trunk features a working lock with a simple oval brass escutcheon and working key. The interior is clean and dry. The sides of the trunk incorporate brass cup handles and the back of the trunk is clean. The floor of the trunk is also original. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use. This item would look superb in a variety of rooms including the hallway, living room or in the bedroom at the foot of a bed as an ottoman, or even as a coffee table in the living room.
The trunk boasts a rich brown elm colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
