Description:
Here is a stunning quality antique English Georgian linen press with small proportions, incorporating lovely flame mahogany doors, circa 1810, in good condition. The top section supports a drop down (detachable) thumb-moulded cornice, above two exquisite flame mahogany doors, with inset rectangular panels. The left door features its original brass locking mechanism (at the top and bottom of the door). The right-hand door retains its original working brass lever lock (with working key) and the original key escutcheons and hinges (on both doors). The doors open to reveal a tall hanging compartment, incorporating twin telescopic (pullout) hanging rails and other hanging hooks (please note, the telescopic rails can be replaced with a traditional single hanging rail / pole, if preferred). The floor of the top section has been removed to allow long garments, such as coats or dresses to hang without gathering on the floor.
Below, are two small dummy drawers over a large working drawer. The drawer is constructed with fine hand dovetail joints and a cock-beaded frame: including mahogany drawer linings and a pine drawer bottom. The drawer fronts feature later circular period brass handles. The press retains its original key escutcheons and original working lever locks (with key). The outer frame of the linen press is decorated with fine reeded moulding. The press is raised on its original bracket. The linen press also features the original backboards. What makes this linen press rare is its size. Linen presses are usually larger (and taller). This linen press would be ideal for a small apartment or small bedroom, where space is limited. The linen press dismantles into two sections (top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom. The cornice can also be unscrewed if necessary to gain access up tight stairs or through narrow doorways.
This is a sought after linen press due to its quality construction using fine quality flame mahogany door timbers (at this time, England was importing top quality mahogany timbers from the colonies). The linen press is designed in the classic Regency style, with simple, pronounced clean lines and a focus on symmetry.
The linen press has a rich dark red-brown mahogany colour. It has a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Width = 117.8cm or 46⅜” or 3ft 10⅜”
Depth = 49cm or 19¼” or 1ft 7¼”
Thee above internal dimensions relate to the internal space of the top section of the linen press, which is used for hanging space. This may be useful if you have clothes of a certain length or coat hangers of a certain width.
Condition Report:
This item is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame (see photos), but nothing significant considering its age. Both doors close and lock comfortably. There are no splits to the flame mahogany doors (which is common in linen presses). The doors lock using the original brass working lever lock (with working key). The sliding trays in the top of the press have been replaced with twin telescopic (pullout) hanging rails. Please note: these can be replaced with a traditional hanging rail, if preferred. The drawers incorporate later brass period handles. The doors and drawers retain the original brass key escutcheons and original brass lever locks (with working key). The top drawer is a dummy drawer (in order to allow long garments to hang unimpeded in the linen press). The bottom drawer slides out and closes flush to the frame. The press is raised on its original top quality bracket feet. The linen press also features the original backboards.
