Description:
Here is an example of an unusual and fine quality antique English Georgian oak bookcase / cupboard, incorporating a chest of drawers below, circa 1800, in good original condition. It would make an ideal a bookcase in an office or even a kitchen housekeeper’s cupboard. The cupboard features a moulded cavetto cornice above twin panel doors, which open to reveal three internal shelves and three internal compartments. The panel doors retain their original brass locking mechanisms. Lovely oak medullary rays are prominent in the oak on the front of the bookcase. The top two shelves are adjustable, while the bottom shelf is fixed and forms the roof of three side-by-side compartments below. Two of the internal compartments are open-fronted, while the centre cubbyhole incorporates a door with working lock and key. The cupboard doors features the original hinges, working lock and key. The cabinet interior retains its original condition; it has not been lined or painted (which is usually the case in later years).
Below the cabinet section, sits a sturdy base, which incorporates five drawers in a two-over-three arrangement (two small drawers above three larger ones). The drawers are hand dovetailed; incorporate oak linings and cock beaded fronts, and retain their original brass swan neck handles and escutcheons. The drawers also boast the original workings steel locks (with a working key). The base stands on its original ogee bracket oak feet; the sides of the cupboard feature inset oak panels. The back of the cupboard features its original oak backboards. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy access into the house.
This antique oak bookcase radiates a rich oxblood colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This antique oak bookcase cupboard in is good original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The cupboard features the original internal shelves and backboards and the doors retain their original brass locking mechanism. The drawers retain their original brass swan neck handles, brass key escutcheons and steel locks (with a working key. All drawers are constructed with hand-dovetailed joints, oak drawer lining and the drawers close flush to the frame. The cupboard stands on its original ogee bracket feet. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
