Here is a fine quality George III solid oak chest on chest, circa 1800, of handsome design and in good original condition. It originates from the border area between England and Wales, in the counties of Shropshire, Hereford or the Welsh side, in Powys. Constructed during the latter part of the George III period, it consists of two halves and incorporates ebony and satinwood string inlaid cavetto cornice. An elegant central shell motif inlay is displayed below the cornice, flanked by vertical hexagonal ebony and string inlay sections. The frame of the top section features chamfered reeded columns to the front corners. An elegant horizontal double moulding separates the two chests. The top section consists of three small drawers above three wide graduated drawers below. The drawer fronts are finished with fine mouldings. The central small top drawer never incorporated a turned drawer knob – we believe this was to enhance the aesthetic design. There are four graduated drawers to the lower section, with a shallow top drawer, most likely used to store cravats, ties and other neck wear that was fashionable at the time. A lovely oak grain configuration and colour is prominent to the drawer fronts. The drawers feature the original turned oak knobs (which we have polished) along with the original brass key escutcheons and working lever locks and keys. The drawers are pine lined and hand dovetailed. The sides of the chests are also constructed from solid oak. The whole of the chest stands on its original carved ogee bracket feet.
The chest boasts a rich warm red and brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom and is very useful as there are so many storage drawers. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The chest is in good original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. All the drawers retain the original oak knobs (which have been wax polished). The 8 drawers, which feature key escutcheons, also feature their original working lever locks (with a working key). The drawers close flush to the frame. This oak chest retains its original polish, which is why it boasts a fantastic rich colour and patination. There has been minor restoration to the back of the chest to repair some of the vertical boards. The chest also stands on its original carved bracket feet. It is solid in joint, does not wobble and is ready to use.
