Description:
Here is a stunning quality antique English Regency linen press, constructed from top quality flame mahogany, satinwood and ebony, circa 1820, in good original condition. The top section supports a drop down (detachable) protruding banded cornice, above two exquisite flame mahogany doors, with inset rectangular panels, decorated with satinwood cross-banding, flanked by further satinwood & ebony string inlay. The left door retains its original brass strip (a sign of quality) and brass locking mechanism. The right-hand door features a working lever lock (with working key). The two doors open up to reveal the original four oak sliding linen trays. Below, is a bank of graduated drawers, comprising a two-over-three configuration. The drawers are constructed with fine hand dovetail joints; drawer linings and bottoms are constructed from solid oak. The drawer fronts retain their original brass oval back plates, handles and key escutcheons, along with the original brass lever locks (with working key). The outer frame of the linen press bases was designed with a two-tone effect, in order to highlight the contrast between the frame and drawer fronts.
The linen press is raised on its original splayed feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards. The linen press dismantles into two sections (top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom. The cornice can also be unscrewed if necessary to gain access up tight stairs or through narrow doorways.
This is a sought after linen press due to its quality construction using fine quality flame mahogany timbers (at this time, England was importing top quality mahogany timbers from the colonies). The linen press is designed in the classic Regency style, with simple, pronounced clean lines and a focus on symmetry.
The linen press boast a striking two-tone colour to highlight the contrast between the mellow door panels, drawer fronts and frames. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
