Description:
Here is a superb exhibition quality antique Edwardian flame mahogany bookcase, in the style of the neo-classical Georgian period, made by the renowned cabinetmakers, S&H Jewell of London, circa 1900, in excellent original condition. This bookcase comprises a carved nulled protruding cornice, with a glazed cabinet top and cupboard base below. The top of the cabinet boasts a shaped cornice with nulled carvings. Below is a glazed shelved cabinet. The glazed doors boast decorative astragal beading, with all doors retaining the original brass drop handle latches, with the original working locks (with key). The inside of the cabinet is divided into three shelved sections, with a total of nine height adjustable / removable shelves. The cabinet rests on a cupboard base. The top of the base features three fully working mahogany lined drawers, which have brass swan neck handles on round escutcheons. There is a plaque affixed to the inside of the central drawer, which reads “S&H Jewell Est. 1830. 26 Parker Street, London W.C.2”. The drawers also boast hand dovetailing and quarter beading (a sign of quality). Below is a triple compartment cupboard with three fielded panel doors. All three doors retain their original brass drop handle latches and original working locks. Each compartment within the cupboard section is divided into 2 tiers. The bookcase retains the original key, which operates all doors. You can tell that the bookcase has been constructed to the highest standard; when you open and close the glass doors, the joints between the doors and carcass are of the smallest tolerances. The base rests on its original moulded plinth. The bookcase dismantles into three sections – cornice, glazed cabinet and cupboard base – for ease of transportation and access.
This bookcase features a rich mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the office or library. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional.
Provenance:
S & H Jewell were fine quality cabinet makers, established in London, in 1830. They worked as a family business on their premises at 29-31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, in London, later moving to 26 Parker Street, London, W.C.2. They are recorded as having sold furniture to the Arts and Crafts home, Standen House at East Grinstead in Sussex. Aside from constructing their own furniture, they also restored earlier antiques and sold them on from their London shop.
Condition Report:
This bookcase is of exhibition quality in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The cabinet doors feature the original glass (which is not damaged). All three glazed doors retain their original working latches and locks; there is a working key. Likewise, the cupboard base retains its original brass locks and latches to all doors. As the bookcase boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination.
