Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English Georgian Regency bow front mahogany and inlaid whatnot corner table or washstand, circa 1810, displaying a lovely rich colour, in excellent condition. Originally designed as a washstand, they are now commonly used as occasional corner tables; ideal in smaller rooms, which makes use of corner spaces, where space is limited. Perfect for displaying photographs or ornaments or for placing the telephone on in the hallway. The table boasts a quarter-circular shape, with simple top and curved gallery upstand. Below is a shaped frieze, decorated with satinwood string inlay. The table top is raised on three supports, above a second tier, which incorporates a mahogany lined, hand dovetailed drawer. The drawer boasts satinwood inlay to the perimeter, with circular brass knobs. The drawer runs smoothly and closes flush to the frame. The drawer is flanked by two faux drawers, which mimic the design of the true drawer. The table stands on three splayed block legs, connected by stretchers, which converge to create a small shaped central shelf space. The table is designed so it can be situated in the corner of the room. The item is solid in joint and ready to use.
This item features a lovely rich mahogany colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This mahogany whatnot would look superb in a variety of rooms, particularly the living room. The table would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This mahogany whatnot is in excellent condition, considering its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and top, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Some old ink stains are present inside the drawer bottom and marks to the lower tier shelf (see photos). The drawer is in good working order and closes flush to the frame, featuring dovetail construction, satinwood perimeter and original circular brass knob. The frame has been constructed in the traditional joined manner. Historical woodworm to the satinwood stringing on the drawer front, which has been thoroughly treated. Please remember this item is over 200 years old! The table has been French polished by hand in our workshop, to a professional standard. The table therefore has a fantastic rich colour and patination. This table is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
