Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Regency mahogany harpist / cellist revolving music chair with adjustable seat height, circa 1830, in excellent condition. The chair back features an elegant splayed bar back, incorporating floral carving, with fine brass spindles below, in the shape of a harpist’s musical instrument. This was why this style of chair was referred to as a “Harpist’s chair”. Elegant lye shaped reeded and scroll supports flank the brass spindles, with anthemion detail above, supported by a decorative plinth and a reeded shaped bar below. The chair has been recently re-upholstered in a brown leather seat, decorated with brass studwork at the base. The leather is clean and free of marks or damage. The seat can be raised or lowered by rotating the seat on a central wooden threaded screw, which is situated below the seat. The chair base also features a reeded frame. The chair sits on classic Regency splayed reeded legs to the front and rear which are united by stretchers for additional security, and also to support the central threaded bar.
This is a fine quality harpist chair and is very functional as it consumes very little space. This item would complement any home, especially the living or dining room, so don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Condition Report:
This chair is in excellent overall condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering its age. There has been an old repair to the base of the left-hand side of the lyre back and the central reeded horizontal bar between the lyre supports (see photos). Both are old repairs, which are completely solid in joint, and do not detract from the quality or value of this rare type of chair. The circular seat has been recently upholstered in a brown leather finished with brass stud-work. The seat is well stuffed, making it solid and firm to sit on. The base of the seat has been finished with brass stud-work. The revolving seat height mechanism is in excellent working condition and swivels easily. There is no damage to the wooden central threaded bar. The reeded splayed legs are in excellent sturdy condition, with no damage. The chair boasts a rich mahogany colour and patination, having been French polished by hand to a professional standard in our workshop. This chair is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
