Description:
Here is an example of a superb quality antique Regency style inlaid mahogany Secretaire chest of drawers, circa 1900, in good condition. Comprising a mahogany frame, inlaid with harebell garlands tied with ribbon bows to the top and drawer fronts, with boxwood and ebony inlay, including satinwood banding to the drawer fronts. The top drawer slides out, and the front is hinged to reveal a compartmentalized interior consisting of a large central sycamore drawer above several pigeonholes, flanked by smaller sycamore drawers, all of which are oak lined and hand dovetailed. The internal drawers retain their original brass knobs. The Secretaire interior retains its original brass sliding hinges and locking mechanism, along with the original central brass lever lock (with key). The writing surface houses a fine quality dark blue and gold-tooled leather. The long drawers below the Secretaire feature a reverse graduated design, constructed with oak drawer linings and hand dovetail joints. The drawers boast their original exquisite brass oval ribbed back plates and handles; along with the original working brass lever locks (with key). The chest is raised on an elegant shaped apron, along with the original splayed bracket feet.
This item was constructed during the Edwardian period (1900 – 1910), in the style of the Regency period (1812 – 1830), which took its design from the classical beauty and finesse of Egyptian, Roman and Greek classical architecture. This can be seen in the form of refined inlay, clean straight lines and splayed feet. During the Edwardian period, there was a popular resurgence in Regency style furniture.
The Secretaire features a rich brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, from the landing to the bedroom. This campaign chest would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
