Description:
Here is an example of a good quality set of 4 antique mahogany Georgian Hepplewhite dining chairs, with newly upholstered seats, circa 1780, in excellent condition. The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature an arched moulded top rail, with a finely executed pierced open fretwork central splat, flanked by moulded vertical rails. Incorporating a drop-in seat design, the seats been newly upholstered in top quality hard-wearing cotton & silk upholstery, with hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The chairs are raised on fluted tapering block legs to the front, with sabre legs to the rear, united by four stretcher bars for additional strength. Please note, this is a true set of chairs, they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs.
The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale.
The chairs feature a rich dark brown mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
The chairs would look superb in the dining or boardroom. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
These Hepplewhite dining chairs are in good condition having been wax polished. Nominal old use marks to the frame and leading edges, but nothing significant, considering their age. The chairs boast the original polish, giving them a rich brown mahogany colour. Age related repairs to pierced fretwork backs, which are completely solid in joint. The seats have been newly upholstered; therefore, the fabric is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. This is a true set from the day of its construction (it has not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs). The chairs are solid in joint; they do not wobble and they are ready to use.
