Description:
This is a fine quality set of six English antique solid oak Georgian Hepplewhite country dining chairs, circa 1800, in excellent original condition. The chairs are constructed of solid oak and feature an arched top rail, with a high-back, finely executed pierced open fretwork central splat, flanked by shaped vertical rails, in the classic Hepplewhite style. The chairs feature solid twin-plank oak seats. The chairs are raised on block legs to the front, with splayed block legs to the rear, united by twin stretcher bars at either side and single stretcher front and back, for additional strength. The chairs have been constructed in the traditional mortice and tenon pegged construction method. Please note, this is a true set of chairs, they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs.
The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale.
The chairs feature a rich dark brown oak colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
The chairs would look superb in the dining room or kitchen. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
These country dining chairs are in excellent original condition having been wax polished. Nominal old use marks to the frame and leading edges, but nothing significant, considering their age.
The chairs retain the original polish; therefore, they boast a fantastic patination and rich colour, which cannot be recreated if the chairs were re-polished. The seats are solid oak, with only nominal old use marks. This is a true set from the day of its construction (they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs). The chairs are solid in joint; they do not wobble and they are ready to use.
