Description:
This is a fine quality antique Victorian Art Nouveau mahogany marquetry inlaid occasional armchair, circa 1900, having been newly re-upholstered, and is in excellent condition. This Art Nouveau chair is constructed of solid mahogany. The armchair boasts a shaped top rail, interspersed with elegant scroll carvings, decorated with boxwood & tulipwood marquetry panel, above a pierced fan-back central splat, encompassed in a floral shaped frame, which is decorated with boxwood inlay and further scroll carvings. Supported by shapped supports to the sides, the back unites with crook shaped arms, raised on shaped supports, which secure the back to the seat frame. The shaped seat frame is decorated with boxwood string and ebony inlay across the front. The seat has been newly upholstered and re-webbed to a professional standard, in top quality and hard wearing aqua blue colour structured cotton polyester mix; finished with matching braiding. If you do not like the upholstery colour, we can re-cover in a fabric of your choice. The seat is firm – you do not sink into it – but is very comfortable to sit on. The chair frame has been cleaned and French polished, by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop. The chair is raised on cabriole legs, and shaped legs to the rear.
This Art Nouveau chair features a rich mahogany brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This Art Nouveau chair would look superb in the hall, library, office (as a desk chair), living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Art Nouveau Movement:
Dating between 1896 – 1914, the Art Nouveau period was known for women with long hair, flowers and curves, and so is Art Nouveau furniture. The Paris Exposition of 1900 introduced furniture styles reflecting what was happening in the rest of the design world, such as jewellery and silver. This style of furniture was not warmly embraced, as the sweeping lines were not very conducive to mass production. The French however, held it in higher esteem. Legs tend to be sweeping or cabriole.
